5 highlight games of the schedule
36ers Bullets* @ JackJumpers 3 Decemeber 2021
Inaugural home game for the JackJumpers, opening game of the NBL season, opening of upgraded MyState Bank arena, its as big as it gets for the new franchise.
*This game was originally scheduled against the 36ers but was changed to the Bullets by the NBL as part of broader scheduling changes in the opening rounds due to meet local state and territory COVID requirements
JackJumpers @ Taipans 11 December 2021
Not a matchup many would pick as a “blockbuster, however this game could have a bit of feeling behind it. After a strong NBL 18-19 seasons that saw them reach the playoffs, the Taipans had a dismal season in NBL 20-21 that saw them collect the wooden spoon and fire coach Mike Kelly. With new coach Adam Forde at the helm he will be hoping for a strong start to the season, a loss on their home floor to the new franchise would question what Taipans team is turning up in season 21-22
This is the JackJumpers first of four game road trip and would be huge for the franchose to get to their first away win in the books in round 2. In addition, after this match the two teams don’t meet again until 13 March (Round 15).
JackJumpers @ Wildcats 17 December
There is already some pre-concieved rivalry between these two teams already with the so called “Perth Jackjumpers” references with the amount of former Wildcats players and staff moving down south. Now look I know all sports love rivalries, especially for new teams, but why we’re trying to pitch the most successful NBL club in history as a rival is a still strange move. If we landed Mitch Norton I probably would agree we deserve it.
But that’s actually not why I put this game on the list, its simply to see how the JackJumpers take on the hardest road games in the NBL. Perth Arena has been a fortress for Wildcats for many years, you just have to look at the Illawarra hawks who finally came away with a win from “the jungle in game 1 of the semi finals last season. Up until that point the wildcats had won 34 of the previous 35 games in Perth. Lets hope with so much wildcats talent that this will seem a home away from home.
United @ JackJumpers 1 January 2022
The Jackjumpers have their first match against NBL champsions at home on new years day, Despite them looking like a very different team to the one that won the championship, they will be in the hunt for a championship with recent Olympic bronze medalists Matthew Dellevadova, and Chris Goulding. The two teams battle it out once again at MyState Arena one week later.
JackJumpers @ Phoenix 10 January 2022
I am so glad the NBL agrees with me and has given this match up the Monday night blockbuster matchup it deserves. This match puts together the NBL’s two newest teams together for the first time, and one I am fairly sure the Phoenix would not want to drop, particulary on their traditional home court at the state basketball centre, which should get a good crowd in as its school holidays.
Although only embarking on their third season, the Phoenix made the playoffs in 2021 with a very strong back end of the season that kickstarted through 2nd place at the NBL cup. They will forever be a benchmark of how to run a successful franchise from scratch and a team I genuinely hope came become a strong rival for the Jackjumpers in years to come.
