Although its probably not the free agency news that JackJumpers fans were holding out for this week, there’s exciting news for the Hobart Chargers regarding the JackJumpers.
Jarred Bairstow has officially signed up for the Hobart Chargers for the remainder of the NBL1 season.
Bairstow has come off a successful NBL season, averaging two points and two rebounds in nine minutes per game. Yes those numbers don’t exactly jump off the page, but Jarred is on the court as a defensive role-player. At 201cm he’s there to set good screens, boxes out the opposition, while making everyone else on court look good.
Defensively he was focused limiting the impact of opposition power forwards and centres. This role expanded following the season-ending injury to Will Magnay, where along with Fabian Krslovic the duo played the majority of minutes at the centre position.
Bairstow’s defensive impact was best highlighted through the finals, where he played an important role in limiting the offensive output of Melbourne’s MVP contender Jo Lual-Acuil.
The addition to the Chargers creates one of the impressive and biggest front courts on NBL1 South. Bairstow joins 211cm Harry Froling and 205cm Ole Angerstein. This allows coach Anthony Stewart to “go big” at times with all three on court, while the added depth will help keep the players fresh throughout the season.
Jarred Bairstow is the 8th JackJumpers to commit to team in the NBL1 competition, full list below.
