Magnay return still undecided

There no timeline yet for a return to to the court for JackJumpers centre Will Magnay who is still recovering from a foot injury sustained the off season.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, JackJumpers assistant coach Jarrad Weeks advised Magnay was unlikely to play this weekend against the Sydney Kings.

“He’s tracking pretty well, probably unlikely this weekend. We’ve still got some fitness things that he needs to tick off obviously before you know jumps back into games,” Weeks said.

“He did a little bit [of practice] keeps improving every week so yeah I think with him its obviously going to be a feel thing but probably unlikely for this weekend,”

Magnay is yet to play this season for Tasmania after suffering a foot injury in May while playing for Obradoiro CAB in the Spanish league..

That injury has added onto what has been a difficult few years with injury for Magnay. Since joining the JackJumpers inaugural squad in 2021, ongoing knee injuries has seen him spend more time on the sidelines than on the court.

Prior to the foot injury Magnay looked to be returning to his best form with a strong finish to last season, playing 22 games (5.9 points, 3.4 rounds and 1 block per game) and becoming one of the biggest defensive threats around the rim in the NBL. His form gained the attention of overseas leagues, where after the conclusion of the NBL he signed in Spain mid season. But after 9 games in with Obradoiro CAB a training mishap saw him injure his foot.

Despite this latest setback for the 25 year old centre, Weeks stressed Magnay still plays a significant role with the team

“He’s a very vocal leader for us. “Mags’ definitely sets a tone on the physicality end and the defensive end. Won defensive player of the year for this club last year, so something we’re looking forward to is him getting back,” Weeks said.

The JackJumpers play Sydney Kings on Sunday at 4pm AEDT
